Plan your weekend trip to Mexico

Day 1: Morning

You can fly straight into Puerto Vallarta and get settled at your Puerto Vallarta hotel.

When you’re feeling refreshed and are ready to get out and explore, start your weekend off with a stroll along the beautiful Malecón (boardwalk). There are plenty of beachside cafes and restaurants where you can watch the waves roll in or sand sculptors showing off their skills.

Where to stay: There are plenty of excellent options to choose from, whether it’s the luxurious city center Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel, featuring sea views from room balconies, or the midrange, family-friendly Hotel Tropicana on the edge of town.

Transportation: We recommend renting a car at the Puerto Vallarta airport, so you’ll have the flexibility to get around with ease during your weekend in Mexico. There are bus routes running up and down the coast, but information can be hard to find.

Day 1: Afternoon

  • Venture to the historical downtown of Puerto Vallarta and make a stop by the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe
  • Check out the bustling Flea Market on the north bank of the River Cuale, where you can browse for hours and find handmade goods of all sorts
  • Get lost browsing the art galleries in the Zona Romantica, including the popular Galeria Pacifico with its focus on Mexican artists
  • While you’re in Malecón, we recommend a scuba expedition, since this area is known for its diving spots, and there are several dive shops along the beach. If you’re more comfortable snorkeling, the best spot is in Mismaloya Beach, where you can swim out to see the rock formations at Los Arcos

Day 1: Evening

No Mexico weekend getaway is complete without at least one big night out. The Zona Romantica has an array of popular dining options. Whether you want a seafood restaurant, a steakhouse or a vegan buffet, you’ll find it here.

After dinner, check out the beachside bars, live music venues and dance clubs that line the Malecón and downtown Puerto Vallarta. Avoid the tourist crowds and opt for local favorites like Coppa, famous for its unusual beer-based cocktails, and the late-night dive bar Club Roxy.

Day 2: Morning and Afternoon

For the second day of your Mexico vacation, consider venturing out of the city center with your rental car. You can head east to go hiking in the jungle-covered Sierra Madre Mountains, drive south to explore traditional fishing villages and see the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, or travel northwest to Banderas Bay.

If you choose Banderas Bay, here are our recommendations:

  • Water sports: Come prepared to spend the whole day enjoying every water sport imaginable, from surfing to sailing, kitesurfing to jet skiing
  • Whale watching: Hop on a traditional panga boat out into the bay to see pods of humpback whales swimming with their calves, as well as other sea life such as dolphins, orcas and giant manta rays
  • Nesting turtles: Come between July and September to watch sea turtles nesting on the beaches

Day 2: Evening

For your last evening in your Mexico itinerary, try something a little different. The Rhythms of the Night sunset cruise is more than just a boat ride across the bay; it also features an amazing Aztec-themed acrobatic and dance show (created by the co-founder of Cirque du Soleil) followed by an unforgettable starlit dinner on the beach.

From Puerto Vallarta, you can either fly home from the city airport, or perhaps hop on a bus for the 5-hour trip to Guadalajara to add a whole new leg to your Mexico vacation. Create a stress-free, fun-filled weekend getaway by booking one of our Mexico package deals today.
